“Reincarnation is the religious or philosophical belief that the soul or spirit, after biological death, begins a new life in a new body that may be human, animal or spiritual depending on the moral quality of the previous life's actions. It is derived from Latin and literally means “to take on the flesh again,” in other words, “to take on the fleshy (physical) body.” It simply means that we leave one life and go into another; it is all for the sole purpose of soul development and spiritual growth. However, reincarnation implies that the person remains essentially the same, while occupying a new body.”
his series explores the possibility of a new existence as a floral organism. Flowers in themselves are a symbol for reincarnation: seeding and blooming as birth, decaying and perishing as death, rebirth and re-flowering as reincarnation. Flora, and the correlation between flowers and women, has always been at the centre of the artist’s research. How flowers can invest qualities which align with those of women - idiosyncrasy and reliability, strength and fragility, persistence and vulnerability, progression and stasis.
Reincarnation is also viewed through an autobiographical lens as re-emerging from a period of severe depression. The action of cyclically shrivelling into it and then overthrowing it as perishing and blooming. After every episode there is a renaissance, where the new-old self embodies new qualities and abilities.
There is a further correlation between the cycle of flowers and the menstrual cycle, and the effects of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) experienced by the artist. The monthly repetition of the various phases of the cycle are quoted in the titles of the paintings, and associated with the death and rebirth of the natural organisms. T
The pink colour palette epitomises the hue which stereotypically is associated with women, which in this case acts as a symbol for association and belonging. Belonging to a feminine universe as a research for identity, when depression and PMDD-induced detachment from reality strips you off of it. The relationship between flora and women is strong enough to merge the two. Women become flowers, they are reincarnated without dying, metamorphosing into their truest form, in an exclusively female reality.
Esta exposición se podrá visitar hasta el 4 de mayo de 2024 en Échale Guindas (Pelayo 47, Madrid).
