The collection of paintings on show portrays a series of women that shape the strength, kindness, loneliness and sadness of women the artist has met, seen in films or imagined. They are a representation of the artist as a woman herself, as well as a projection of the women she meets in the street/has come across that she identifies with or aspires to. These women inhabit spaces identifiable as a home, as a physical space as well as a concept.
Alessandra Genualdo has always been fascinated with women and their connection with their home, and the objects they surround themselves with, and how they shape the space around to reflect their personality, aspirations and memories. The objects around the subjects, the clothes they wear, the painted decorative elements that accompany often evoke a palpable sense of nostalgia and reflect something the artist has encountered and taken inspiration from.
The women in Alessandra Genualdo’s paintings subtly show a moment of contemplation, an internal struggle and sense of vulnerability. While they are primarily seen alone, sometimes they appear with a friend or with a pet acting as though an extension of themselves. They mirror Alessandra Genualdo’s ever-changing perception of herself, as well as her idea of women and their facets.
